Well it would depend greatly on the circumstances.
GRAPHIC IMAGE – Please move on if it is too much.
Quick update – the person lived. Depending on how you were chopped in half and your immediate blood loss, you could be (brain) dead in minutes (depending on how long the brain actually takes to die once deprived of blood flow). If however you were squashed in half and the squashing prevented all your blood from leaking out (such as being smashed by a rock in a mine collapse or being run over by a truck tire) you could live many years more. There is such a case of that happening to a man named Peng Shuilin. Peng continues to live to this day even though he was cut in half by a truck tire. In fact, he has even learned to walk again with a prosthetic lower body.
His survival and determination provide great hope and inspiration to those that have seen what he has overcome. Perhaps one day our advancements in medicine and science will allow us to regrow body parts or even survive worse things and still be able to lead a life worth living. After all, to those who love him or are inspired by his triumphs, he has managed to improve the lives of those around him.
What is even more amazing is that he has now opened his own store where he works and is a part of the community. It is called the Half man – Half price store. So when you feel like complaining that you have life rough and it has dealt you a bad hand, take some inspiration from someone who has had rough times also and still continued on.
EDIT at 14,000 views and updated at 40k views.
For those who wondered what shape he was in directly after the accident, here is a link to the video of a similar accident of a Vietnamese officer who suffer a similar accident and was still alert and conscious for at least 6 minutes after the accident without any medical aid. WARNING- This is very graphic and you should be over 18 before viewing. LiveLeak.com – Vietnam police officer still alive after being cut in half by a truck. Sadly the Vietnamese officer died at the hospital from his injuries.
One of the saddest things is that not one person that was nearby sat down and comforted him while he lay there on the ground after suffering a terrible accident.

Not too long before your body dies, but the real you will still be around. That’s a time when the ignorant discover they cannot be killed. Many people already know this. But help is on the way in such dire circumstances, more so for little kids who do not know whom to ask for help.
When you eat a tomato do all the seeds die? When you eat a peach does the seed in the pit always die? Wouldn’t a human merit better protection than a vegetable or fruit? Have you read all of the NDE stuff? Do you think those reports are all from fools trying to lead you astray?
In the old days, certainly up to 13th century, and even to today for some places, the flaming anger rulers invented the hanged, drawn and quartered scenario for people they really did not like. All that damage to the body long after the person is gone! And when such ogre like rulers pass on they will have to reconsider all they have done.
The current holdouts have invented methods more disgusting. They are actually worse than Satan who would not do some of those things. So their future is quite bleak.
Civilization is not automatic, it must be passed on. If too many efforts to preserve what has been attained fail in too many areas it is possible to return to a new starting point for all that has been lost. Some people want to kill everyone except for about 500 million on earth and the proponents of this drastic measure truly think they are civilized.
The word for that attitude is bloodthirsty and such people have connections with actual demons. It never occurs to fix themselves in their minds. They miss the teaching that God is merciful and compassionate, rather, in the blackness of their ignorance they take God’s place as judge of all.
Some nations have overcome such evils. It’s best for each nation to cleanse itself.
We can wonder too for how much longer there will be serial killers. These often disfigure and cut up bodies as well.
If love is truly required for ascending earth, I would think such people will not be there.

Your blood pressure would go to Zero … the Brain has high energy demands… you would be unconscious in 1–3 seconds because your blood will shunt to the easier route … the cut vessels that offer little resistance to flow. Because your brain and heart can use alternate anaerobic means of using lactic acid for energy, they might last another 20–30 seconds in an unconscious and nonfunctional state. This is where death becomes debatable … did you die when all hope was lost or when your heart stopped it’s last quiver … or when your brain cells have stopped listening and acknowledging that it is alive.
Is it a moot point? The dead don’t really care how you define it. Death is more for the living to define that someone has departed this world and we have lost contact with them.

6 minutes or less. If it’s a total pelvectomy under surgical conditions you might actually survive. However, I’m assuming the question refers to a traumatic abdominal transection. Ignoring the complications of a miraculous survival (due to the sudden loss of organs such as the liver, kidneys, and the lower GI tract; hemorrhagic shock; and infection), we have more immediate concerns – the brain. Losing the lower half of your body removes a substantial portion of your blood supply. All of this affects the amount of blood returning to the heart. Without this blood, the heart has greatly reduced preload. Without adequate preload, the heart won’t fill enough to pump blood to the pulmonary circulation. Without this, your systemic blood pressure drops essentially to nothing as now your transected aorta is gushing blood out onto the floor. Liquids always follow the path of least resistance. So, instead of pumping blood into the body, it’s pooling around you. This brings us back to the brain. No blood to the brain equals no oxygen to the brain either. Brain tissue can only survive for about a maximum of 6 minutes without oxygen. Here’s the good news, though. You’ll lose consciousness somewhere between instantly and 10 seconds after this catastrophic injury, so you don’t have to lie there awake waiting to die.

Not nearly soon enough. Charming scenario. You have been reading too much Poe, but I digress.
Presuming that, unlike Poe, the traumatic amputation happened within a second, it depends on a few factors. If the wound is still sealed (you have a bridge collapse on your lower torso, but the end of the bridge is still firmly against your body) you might unfortunately survive for a small amount of time.
If the wound is completely open, you would bleed out and die very quickly.

Loss of 40% of one’s blood supply is considered (almost) immediately fatal. Even a loss of one liter can induce hypovolemic shock. I think it’s reasonable to assume that some quantity of blood approaching 40% might be stored in the legs and pelvis (not to mention the quantities leaking out from both ends simultaneously).
The closest widely-discussed analog we have is “the butcher block cut” (an occupational hazard of that trade) — a deep incision transecting both femoral artery and vein in the same thigh. Anecdotally, this wound has caused death in ninety seconds.

Before the sword ends the cut if it was longitudinal, as the corpus callosum, which is the part of the brain that connects the 2 cerebral hemispheres together, will be cut = immediately kills you as your brain stops functioning ,
If the cut was horizontal , it will take some seconds as the aorta will bleed large amounts of blood

You would die almost immediately.
The blood loss would be rapid, severe, and uncontainable, resulting in the loss of your ability to circulate oxygen to your cells.
