Real Madrid squad pledge their support for Costa Rican shoots stopper Keylor Navas despite a shaky start in the 2-1 win against Bayern Munich in the Allianz Arena on Wednesday in the Champions League.
Navas was not comfortable in the entire first half but his teammates gave him the courage to carry on.
It was more obvious when he failed to deal with Joshua Kimmich’s cross that eventually led to the opening goal of the encounter after Navas positioned himself poorly for the cross.
Despite the error, his team captain Sergio Ramos and Marcelo helped him regain his confidence and return to the solid goalkeeper Madrid have relied on in the Champions League.
With much support in the dressing room, he was able to regain his confidence and steady himself and ended the game as one of the best players of the night after pulling series of saves after Bayern heap pressure to get the equalizer in the dying minute of the game.
Zinedine Zidane has always place value on Navas as he was against the idea of signing new goalkeeper including David De Gea and Kepa Arrizabalaga and has stood to the defence of has Costa Rican after every mistake.
If Navas fails, Zidane always appears to show his support. It was more or less the same when he discussed the blame for Bayern’s goal.
“The goal is a consequence of many errors, he made two or three saves and was very good,” said the Frenchman.
Given the support of his teammates, Navas himself downplayed a goal that, thanks to Lucas Vazquez and Marco Asensio, had much less significance than possible.
“I’m happy,
because in these games you have to be mentally strong no matter what and everyone did a great job,” he told Marca.
Real Madrid will face Levante on Saturday at the Santiago Bernabeu.
