Manchester United captain Michael Carrick is in line for the U23 coaching job next season.
The Sun says Carrick is set to take a coaching role up at the club, with the backing of first-team chief Jose Mourinho.
And it is understood the ex-England midfielder could take over the youth team next season.
The U23 side are bottom of Premier League 2, seven points adrift with just three matches remaining.
They are managed by Ricky Sbragia after he replaced Warren Joyce who quit to take over at Wigan 18-months ago.
An Old Trafford source said: “There are whispers around the place Michael is a candidate for the job next season.
“Mourinho wants him to cut his teeth on the training ground at Carrington and study other techniques around the globe.
“The Under-23 side have not been having a good time of it. There have been murmurings.
“The club are investing heavily in the youth ranks and the Under-23 side is supposed to supply a steady number of fringe players.
“Michael could well be the man the side turn to if a change is made at the end of the campaign.
“He is familiar with all the players and what Jose requires. It could even see Michael working alongside Ricky.”
