HBelieve it or not, several studies indicate that a high-fat, low-carb diet appears to improve blood sugar among diabetics. That includes saturated as well as unsaturated fat. In one study, the indication leans towards high-fat dairy.  This flies against the commonly held beliefs that fat is the enemy.  More and more medical experts are now reconsidering this stance in the face of new, mounting evidence to the contrary, both for diabetes and heart disease.

Cinnamon as a supplement is also very helpful as a natural approach towards reducing blood sugar numbers. As with all supplements, if you are under treatment with meds, please consult your physician before you consider taking it. It may be contraindicated with your meds or even over-correct your blood sugar levels.

Eating delicious and sumptuous food, is what each one of us craves for! After experiencing some long and tiring working hours in the office; eating well at night, seems to be life’s greatest pleasure. In this regard, having being affected with diabetes shouldn’t stop anyone from that bliss. Although, it is quite reasonable that people with chronic diabetes have quite different nutritional needs; due to which, many times, diabetic recipes can be acknowledged to be bland and tasteless. However, today, different healthy ingredients can be obtained from different parts of the world; and hence with a smart planning of your meal to allow you to manage your diabetes with the same taste and nutritional requirement.

The write up may brief our readers about few food tips to explore with better understanding of diabetes and body’s nutritional requirement.

Better understanding of Carb Requirement

Knowing about, how much carbohydrates are needed and what are the different kinds that are required; would be your first step towards, planning your diabetic recipes. In this regard, it is interesting to understand that there are about three different kinds of carbohydrates in the food, such as starches, sugars and fibers. Starchy food may include vegetables like peas, corn, lime beans, potato beans, etc. Whole grains such as oats, barley and rice can as well be categorized under starch. Although, it is important to understand that grains can be divided into whole grain, containing all the three germ layers and with all the necessary nutrients it has to offer; whereas refined grain is mainly connected with middle endosperm layer, which doesn’t contain any vitamins and nutrients, except for the starchy material.

Sugars, are classified as direct sugar, obtained from sugar cane, nectar, confectionaries, and other raw sources as well as indirect sugar that is being obtained from milk, fruits, etc. Fibre is the plant source and is required for healthy digestive system; it can contribute your nutritional requirement by making you feel full and satisfied.

Thus, it would be wise to optimize your carbohydrate requirement by opting for the most nutrient dense choices, with smaller portion size. For that matter, you need to avoid sugary drinks, including soda, sweet tea, fruit punch etc. Whole fruit should be preferred instead of juice. Sweet potatoes can be better alternative for white potato and whole grain oat meals, brown rice and/or barley should always be welcome.

More indulgence towards diabetic superfoods

Thus, your healthy diabetic recipes should contain diabetic super food as listed below with a known low glycemic index and key nutrients such as, calcium, potassium, fibre, magnesium as well as vitamins mainly A, C and E. These superfoods can be:

·

Beans

· Dark green leafy vegetables

· Citrus varieties

· Sweet Potatoes

· Berries and tomatoes

· Fish with high content of omega-3-fatty acids

· Whole grains, nuts as well as fat free milk and yogurt

The combination of these super-ingredients with counted amount of carbohydrate can come up with the most nutritious yet taste meal’ which can be consumed without any fear of sugar shoot up; but off course meal size should be smaller.

Conventional treatment pattern for diabetesis having higher emphasize on inflammatory drugs and good nutritional supplements; however, they lack effective management of the said disease, along with some additional challenges of preventing their damaging effects. On the contrary, recently launched stem cells therapy can be considered as the better alternative to effectively reduce disease progression and restore lost cellular function.

Healthy diet is important not only for diabetics but also for non diabetics. To control blood glucose you should know what to eat and what not. Your diet plan should be focused on controlling blood sugar. There is no special diet restriction in diabetes but following healthy plan makes it easier to control diabetes.

Carbohydrates are very important for diabetics because it has a direct impact on blood sugar. Diabetes patients should eat low glycemic index food which absorbs and metabolized slowly, therefore raises blood sugar level slowly.

Best food for diabetics-

Brown rice

Oatmeal

Non starchy vegetables like asparagus, beans, cucumber, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, sprouts, tomatoes, mushrooms, onions.

Eat fruits that have low glycemic index, example:cherries, grapefruit, pears, apple, orange, grapes, plum, peach, apricot, papaya. Eat 2-3 fruits daily and decide portion size according to size of fruit.

According to the American diabetes association best protein foods for diabetics are-

Plant based protein- bean and bean products, soy nuts, peas, tofu, hummus.

Fish and seafood- fishes which can be eaten in diabetics are albacore tuna, herring, rainbow trout, salmon, catfish, tilapia.

Chicken and other poultry- eat chicken, turkey without skin.

Cheese and eggs

Dairy products in which fat content is low, such as low fat yogurt, low fat milk, unflavored fortified soy milk.

Choose low calorie drinks. Drinks like water, unsweetened tea, diet soda, sugar free juice drinks are best for diabetics. Always drink more water because it helps in elimination of sugar through urine.

The best diet I’ve found for diabetics is a low carbohydrate diet. More specifically, the Paleo diet.

In essence, this diet gets rid of all grains and root vegetables, and consists of mostly vegetables, seeds and nuts that grow above ground, protein, and fat in proper proportions.

ANY FOOD! At the right amount that is.

But if you prefer something a bit healthy, change your carbs preference to :

White rice —> Red/brown rice, carbs/gram is actually almost similar, but since brown rice has more fibre, most likely you feel full quicker

White bread -> 100% whole wheat bread

Potatoes, didn’t find any good substitutes for this one, just make sure to eat it deliberately

Again, i must remind you just because the substitute is healthier doesn’t mean we can eat it freely, the key to a healthy for diabetic and healthy people is the same, a DIVERSE & BALANCED DIET!

Happy eating!
