When 84-year-old Marilyn Sugalski lost her life savings to a scam, she thought she was doomed.
Marilyn and her husband had worked their whole lives for those $18,750, until it was stolen from them in a cruel scam. But all hope was not lost.
Marilyn says scammers contacted her every single day, by phone, email, and text. Eventually, she says, “they get into your head. And when they keep calling you 12, 14 times a day, you’re to the point you just want it over with, done with.”
Marilyn was scammed into depositing her money into a bank account. She didn’t know it at the time, but the account belonged to a paper company. The company believed that money was payment for a huge order that they had recently shipped out to a customer in India. They had no idea it was scammed away from someone who needed it.
Desperate to get her life savings back, Marilyn reached out to her local news station for help. They were able to track the money down to that paper company, and, in turn, reached out to them.
The company didn’t know what had happened until the news station contacted them, but, once they did, they were willing to give Marilyn all her money back. When Marilyn found out, she says, “I cried. I couldn’t thank them enough for doing the right thing.”
Thankfully, Marilyn and her family are now reunited with their all-important life savings, and she says she’ll never fall for something like this again.
