Former Stoke and Ireland football star, Jonathan Walters has announced his retirement from football after failing to recover persistent Achilles heel problem.

The 35-year-old who represented eight clubs during an 18-year career last appeared for Ipswich back in September and has spent the last six months of the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles in a goalless draw at Bolton.

Today, the striker announced his retirement from football on his Twitter account.

‘Isn’t it ironic…my Achilles heel has literally been my Achilles heel and finished me off,’ he wrote.

‘I am now retired from playing football. It’s been epic. Veni vidi vici.’
